We became Brazil for 5 minutes
By: Richard | November 26th, 2008
AS Monaco 3 (Alonso 49, Paulo Andre 50og, Licata 53)
Le Mans 0
A month’s worth of goals in 5 minutes, and a missed penalty to boot! That’s what you get with young talent–wild inconsistency.
Actually, the missed penalty came before the goal glut. Cufre took a dreadful Beckham-esque penalty kick that went into orbit high over the crossbar. That was just before the half, and I was convinced the Monegasques would live to regret the missed opportunity, but no.
Alonso cut into the box from the right and thumped a low left-footed shot into the bottom corner of Pele’s far post for the opener. Just a minute later, Meriem won a free kick and floated a ball into the area that Paulo Andre headed into his own net under pressure from Park. Licata capped things off with the goal of the match. He intercepted a horrible pass from the Baal deep in Le Mans’ half and passed to Meriem, who with his back to goal flicked the ball to the onrushing Licata, who then banged it in from the edge of the box. Fantastic.
ASM is now in 12th and next up they travel to 14th place Auxerre, with whom they share an identical record, but the men from Monaco have a better goal differential thanks to the match I just finished describing.

While looking for the Nancy game on Justin.tv I saw about ten minutes of this game: All three goals and the missed penalty. Pretty crazy!
