Reyes and Maniche?
By: Richard | July 21st, 2008
The rumors are heating up that Atletico journeymen Maniche and Jose Antonio Reyes could be coming to Monaco. I heard about these and dismissed them as rubbish earlier in the summer, but they aren’t going away.
Apparently Roma were also interested in Reyes but their valuation was too low. Both players reportedly have other suitors, so this could still very easily be a bunch of hot air.
Even if it does go through, I’m not sure how I feel about it. Some fans will get all excited because these are ‘name’ players, but ASM have had loads of such players in the recent past (Saviola, Morientes, Chevanton, Di Vaio, and Koller all leap to mind) to no real effect. Add that to the fact that both of these guys change teams often, and I just can’t get that excited. (I do however reserve the right to do a big celebratory post if these guys actually come to Monaco).
In other news, with the departure of Piquionne looking like a ‘when’ rather than an ‘if’, it appears we are interested in bringing ex-Lille forward Peter Odemwingie back from exile in Russia. That wouldn’t be too bad, he’s still only 27. I would prefer someone who scores more frequently, but hey…..

Maniche, Reyes and Odemwingie wouldnt be too bad. I’d rather have Piquionne though.

Is Maniche out of contract @ Atletico, or would Monaco have to spend some cash on him?

Does Monaco have cash?

Maniche is not out of contract, he is simply exiled from the first team. He wouldnt cost that much, but Monaco does not have much money to play around with. There are so many better alternatives though, why is it Monaco is always linked with players from other countries?

I wasn’t quite impressed with Maniche last season with Inter. He isn’t terribly young either..I wouldn’t want to spend big money on an aging player (I’d rather have Piquionne, frankly — can’t he get a pay raise or something?)
I’m terribly excited by the prospect of Adu playing in France. Is the transfer legit? Is he actually coming?

I thought Maniche was good when he played for Inter, Mancio never gave him a chance, he was too attached to Stankovic to play anyone else.
And the Adu loan was just announced on the Benfica official site, apparently …

(I might just be me then — again, Mancio and his playing favourites.)
American Soccer has also announced it, I guess it’s legit! Maybe the US will pay more attention to L1 now!

i defy anyone to make sense of Monaco’s mercato rumors. they have a bunch of young talent that one would assume they would like to tie down. one minute they’re flat busted broke, the next they’re throwing big money at michael bradley, freddy adu, reyes, etc. anyone who knows what they’re doing is welcome to write this blog in my place.

I think De Bontin doesnt know how much money he will be allowed to spend.

I hope Monaco know what they are doing. Poor financial management is what prompted the exodus back in 2003/2004 - the club had to sell players to stave off their debt, which would have seen them relegated, so they took advantage of their CL run to get decent sale prices.
