Rennes 2-ASM 1 and other assorted bad news
By: Richard | November 18th, 2008
Rennes 2 (Sow 43, Briand 53)
AS Monaco 1 (Cufre 72 pen)
Many of the fans are saying that Monaco’s recent purple patch was just an aberration and that we are back to the relegation form we displayed early in the season. I’m not so sure; we just played 2 of the toughest teams in Ligue 1, so 2 losses are not entirely unexpected.
Roma made his first start of the season in place of the injured Ruffier, and the difference was evident. Not that Roma played badly, but Ruffier is our best player this season and you get the feeling he might have kept out one of the goals Roma let in on Sunday. A more obvious culprit would be N’Koulou, who really had an evening to forget. For Rennes’ first goal, Sow evaded him and slammed a shot against Roma. Sow got a second chance on the rebound and beat Roma with an exquisite lob. For the second goal, Briand outran and overpowered N’Koulou to get possession of a long ball and easily slot one past Roma. Cufre did manage to pull one back from the spot, but despite bringing on Adu in the 69th minute, Monaco could not equalize.
Most of the fans in the forums blame this season squarely on Ricardo, claiming he is a chop-and-change manager with no tactical knowledge. Myself, I think that with the talent the squad has, a ‘good’ manager would get us only to about 8th or 9th place anyway, so…While I’m speaking of the fans, most of them are not very enamored with everyone’s favorite American starlet. There is no open hostility or dislike of Adu, just the general feeling that he isn’t cutting the mustard at Monaco and should go to a lower-level Ligue 1 or Ligue 2 side or maybe back to MLS.
What else have I got here? Oh, our bid for Tiago was rejected by Juventus.
And finally….former star Menez has flopped at Roma and they’re already thinking of loaning him to Fiorentina in the winter.
It’s a great time to be a Monaco supporter!

Had Adu played enough to be fairly judged, Richard, or is it just a few, unimpressive appearances as a sub?
[FWIW, I'm pretty sure the Menez-to-Fiorentina story is entirely made up. That said, I'd take him in exchange him for Pazzini any day, which is what the rumor suggested was in the cards.]

Seriously, give Freddy a start here or there and put him in a central attacking mid position and he would probably be pretty successful. But until they really give him a shot he will continue to disappoint. Obviously no one else on the squad is getting anything done, so what is there to lose?

I read that Menez could be loaned to a French team.
