Marseille 0-0 AS Monaco: well, there’s a 3rd kit you can look at!

No doubt inspired by this week’s CL results, Monaco decided to wear their Liverpool-esque all-red 3rd kit for the big away match at the Stade Vélodrome, and just like the Scousers, as soon as they donned them, they completely lost the ability to score goals! (I guess they hadn’t heard that the red kits lose their special powers in league matches.)

L’OM dominated this game but couldn’t score. Thank heavens Niang wasn’t as sharp as usual in front of goal, and although I like Baky very much, a forward of line of Cissé-Niang still frightens me much more than this year’s strikeforce at Marseille. Still, Ruffier had to claw out a neat diving header from Kone, and Niang had a header come back off the woodwork, so the chances were there.

As for our team, well….there wasn’t much to talk about. They played a sort of 4-5-1 with Nimani up front. Park was anonymous after his sizzling debut. Gosso went off injured in the first half, I’m not sure how serious his injury is. American readers of this blog might be disappointed to hear that Freddy did not even make his usual joker appearance.

It’s nice to see a young team like Monaco not get a bit overwhelmed and intimidated in a match like this. (”Coach, what’s that strange noise coming from the stands?” “They’re called fans, son.”) I frankly cannot believe that after 6 matches, Monaco have the joint second-best defense in Ligue 1, conceding only 3 goals so far. All this with two long-term injuries to starting defenders in the pre-season.

Next up: Lille.
