Bravo Hrvatska! (Auxerre 0-1 ASM)

Auxerre 0
AS Monaco 1 (Pokrivac 24)
Wow. The ASM forums were pretty convinced that we had an easy opponent this week, but I was pretty nervous about this one, given Auxerre’s fantastic defensive record at the Stade l’Abbe Deschamps (they hadn’t given up a goal at home in a loooong time). That and ASM’s weak attack on what looked like a freezing cold night looked like a good bet for a loss.
However, Monaco’s fantastic Croatians stole the show. Auxerre failed to break up a Monaco outside the box in the first half and the ball ended up with Pokrivac, who smoked a looping shot over the outstretched hands of Riou in the Auxerre goal.
Roma went off injured in the first half and was replaced by third-choice keeper Yohann Thuram-Ulien (yes, he is related to Lilian). I’m not sure yet how serious Roma’s injury is, I’ll have to read the official forums. He looked OK in this game but he hasn’t been tested much…
Dario Simic gave what I consider to be his best performance in the diagonal shirt, the highlight of which was certainly when he appeared out of nowhere to clear Langil’s shot off the line in the second half. The Simic-Adriano partnership looked great in shutting down an admittedly weak and unimaginative Auxerre attack.
Alonso was also injured and did not return for the second half. I hope he returns for the next match at home v. Sochaux. After all, we need every player we can get after Ricardo revealed his brilliant plan for the winter mercato: do nothing! I agree that the players who are looking to return from injury will give the team a boost, but that’s only if nobody gets injured the rest of the way, and as we’ve seen, that isn’t going to happen! so hurry up and bring Henry back tout de suite!
