Behold!….
By: Richard | July 16th, 2008Welcome to the AS Monaco blog! I’ll be doing my best to bring you all the news and information from the world’s mightiest club to hail from a principality!
Is that blog title arrogant enough for you? Just a little joke at Monaco’s reputation as a tax haven for the jet-set crowd, where the local population is more interested in yachting than football. Besides, I thought “Greetings, Peasants” would have been a bit crass…

Lame jokes aside, there’s a lot more than gambling and Formula One going on in this corner of the French Riviera. If you don’t know about this club, you should (oh dear, there goes the arrogance again). First of all, our red-and-white diagonal shirts are unique and distinctive. Pro Evo/Winning Eleven enthusiasts will no doubt be familiar with the club’s ground, the Stade Louis II. This club was in the Champions League final just four years ago and is one of the only teams not named Olympique Lyonnais to win Ligue 1 in the past decade. Many of the stars of France’s WC 98 and Euro 2000-winning teams played at Monaco at one time or another (Henry, Trezeguet, Thuram, Djorkaeff, Barthez, and Petit), as well as several international stars that any self-respecting football fan should know (Weah, Klinsmann, Adebayor). Of course, results haven’t been so great in the last few years, but OL can’t win the league forever, right? (Seriously, Satan. How many titles was Aulas’ soul worth, anyway?)
So join me as I prepare you for the upcoming season by introducing you to the team (You’ll want to pay attention–chances are some of these guys will be on your team someday. Monaco is loaded with young talent and has a less than stellar record at hanging onto its assets). We’ll also tackle issues of deep, deep social significance such as: just what shade of blue is our away kit this year?

Oh, yea! Monaco!
What’s the word on Freddy Adu and/or Michael Bradley?

Great to see a Monaco blog! I always had a soft spot for Monaco, not a fan of the tax shelter itself, but the club always seems be the starting point of really exciting careers (as a Barcelona fan I must thank you guys for giving us Yaya, Marquez, and Giuly), plus it’s in a very unqiue position.

Great that you’re starting too!

As for Adu, your guess is as good as mine. I’m not sure what the delay is. The club bid 8.5 million euros for Bradley, that is significantly more than any of his other pursuers that I am aware of. I’m really hoping he comes to the Rock. Naturally, I would welcome both players, but if I can only have one it would definitely be Bradley.
