ASM 2-0 Lorient: Korean Idol
By: Richard | September 14th, 2008
AS Monaco 2 (Park 25, Nimani 71)
Lorient 0
That’ll teach me to doubt the scouting department at Monaco. Let’s be tactful and say that selling and loaning out our best offensive players and replacing them with an unproven and inexpensive Asian import did not seem like the best of ideas.
Boy, was I wrong.
Park Chu-Young could have scarcely had a better home debut, scoring one goal and setting up the other in a Man of the Match performance. Gosso picked out the Korean with a lobbed pass from inside his own half, which Park controlled and then flicked past the onrushing Audard from the edge of the area. It was quite an elegant debut goal; the marking by Lorient was awful, but Park timed his run to perfection, and the way he killed the pass with his knee and coolly slotted home was a joy to watch.
Monaco’s second was even more impressive. Park threaded the needle with a neat diagonal through ball from the left and from inside his own half, setting up substitute Nimani to dribble Audard and tap into an empty net. Sublime.
The visitors did not offer too much in the way of opposition, and what little they could muster was ably snuffed out by a fine performance by Ruffier in goal. Hardcore France fans may know him from playing for France Espoirs, and he has looked good in place of the injured Roma. The defense looked great again–only 3 goals allowed in 5 matches this season and never more than 1 conceded in any match. Simic really looks like the commanding presence Monaco was hoping for when they signed him to bolster a defense plagued with injuries.
Freddy came on as a late-second half sub and again failed to make any significant impact.
So, confidence is high in the ASM camp as we move up to 6th place, but next week’s trip to the Velodrome to face l’OM will be the toughest match we’ve had yet this early season.

Even though we sold Menez and loaned out NenĂª we can still play great football.. Told ya Richard. Monaco still got it and we will be one of the better teams this season

ALONSO HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN US ALREADY? :’(
But by god, Park! I saw the goal, it was beautiful. Monaco really know how to invest! (and make money.) If you don’t mind me asking, how is Adu?
