AS Monaco 0-0 AS Roma

By: Richard | August 3rd, 2008

Monaco concluded their pre-season program with a 0-0 draw against Roma at the Stade Louis II. Despite the lack of goals, there was plenty for this blogger to get excited about…actually the lack of goals was quite good news. Monaco have now had back-to-back clean sheets against great opposition. Yes, they were pre-season matches and neither Lyon nor Roma fielded their first-choice 11, but I will take any positives I can with our normally sieve-like defense.

As for individual players, it was great to see Menez on the pitch in the red and white again. He came on as a second-half substitute along with Argentine new boy Alonso (I would introduce him, but the Bordeaux blog has already done a great job of that). He looks a lively player on the ball and he’s wearing Piquionne’s old number 18.

Ricardo fielded a 4-4-2 again with Pino in a free role with Nimani up front. They had a shot or two, but this club needs an upgrade in attack very quickly. Hopefully Tenorio or someone like that is coming soon. We start the season against PSG, who are riding a tidal wave of emotion and enthusiasm. I would almost rather face Lyon or OM.

Still no sign of Adu yet, for all my countrymen who are wondering how he’s getting on.

Roma was one of the team rumored to be interested in Menez. I hope he didnt impress them too much.

Yeah, Menez is in no way ready to leave France. Plus he’s Monaco’s franchise player. For me, he’s the best young player outside of France’s big 3 clubs.

Hey to the familiar faces that I see here, is this where we’re hanging out?

Anyway, here’s the group against PSG this weekend:

In any case, here’s the group the team has against PSG:

Roma, Ruffier – Mongongu, Adriano, Modesto, Pokrivac, Cufré, Muratori – Mangani, D.Perez, Gosso, Leko, Zola, Martin, Alonso, Diaz, Meriem, Nenê – Pino, Licata, Ménez, Nimani

Injured: Gakpé, Bernardi, Bakar, Dufau, Joneleit, Sagbo
    Olympics: Adu, N’Koulou
CFA: Bulot, Mollo, Legati, Yohann Thuram

The lack of a target man and competent defenders is apparent. Other than that, let’s see what our gazillion attacking midfielders/wingers can do (Ménez, Nêne, Pino, Alonso).

Oh to Inara, I agree on Ménez, I think when he wants to be, he’s definitely the best offensive player outside Lyon/Bordeaux/Marseille.
